Background

Ian Sixsmith has been working with Clearmark Solutions (Interactive Coding Equipment (ICE) for over six years, he kicked started his career with a three-year apprenticeship in the machine tool industry, before moving into the automotive industry. Throughout his career, Ian has taken on many roles involving the design and development of integrated control systems, before finally joining the ICE team as a Field Service Engineer in 2010.

Over the last two years, Ian has progressed with the company and is now responsible for designing and implementing a range of bespoke integrated digital coding solutions across the UK, for a range of large and small businesses in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and industrial manufacturing sectors.

What does your typical working day look like?

“Every day is different! The industry we work in is always changing, as are the projects we work on, if you want a job in engineering, you have to be adaptable and think quickly in order to prioritise the most urgent requirements.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“Some of the best things about working for the company would be the variety within the role, being able to see a project through from start to finish and making improvements to existing systems, so that our solutions are continually improved.”

Favourite things about ICE?

“It’s good to be part of a growing business that has kept a small company feeling, you are given a lot more responsibility in comparison to some bigger firms, and a great opportunity to make a difference and progress.”

What advice would you give to students looking for a career in engineering?

“If you’re looking for a job in engineering, it is important that you keep your finger on the pulse, are flexible, willing to gain as much work based experience as possible and are always learning and questioning changes within the field.”
